COMMUNITY SUPPORT Our members raise fresh organic vegetables in the Elk Grove Community Garden and for the Elk Grove Food Bank Services, contributing to the Elk Grove Community Assistance Network and a variety of other garden and gardening related projects. Arbor day is celebrated with a tree planting at a local area school. The following are some ideas for projects the GOTC Community Outreach Committee might undertake in the coming year. Some of these ideas would require fund raising and GOTC membership approval, for example: · Tree planting (donate trees to parks, playgrounds, schools and other community places) · Promoting conservation, protection of natural resources and environmental awareness · Planting wildflowers (along creeks and designated natural habitats) · Subscribing to gardening magazines for the public library · Promoting civic beautification projects · Establishing a scholarship fund for a worthy student undertaking studies in fields such as agriculture, botany, forestry, landscape architecture, ecology, oceanography, geography, etc. · Providing education programs · Collecting Pennies for Pines as presented by Carol Wheeler at the September GOTC business meeting in her report on the district meeting · Adopting a local community service program These are ideas to get the club thinking about outreach programs that it might want to sponsor. Share your thoughts with Roberta Gleeson (wascsan@yahoo.com) or Phil Teeters (teeters@frontiernet.net) or just bring them up at next meeting. |
